Helping people feel better about themselves

Yellowknife (Apr 06/01) - Rosaly Emocling likes her job because it allows her to do something she enjoys -- making other people happy.
Emocling is a beauty advisor at the Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio. Part of her job is helping introduce people to the lotions, potions and cleansers that will help them feel best.
In a make-over area set apart from the main store she helps people understand how to use the products the store sells, particularly the skin care products.
"There's lots (of different kinds of skin)," Emocling said. "Some people have combination, some oil, some dry, some sensitive. We help show people how to use the products before they buy. That's the purpose of this make-over room."
The products are used in the process of giving clients facials -- cleansing and conditioning their facial skin. The 'express facials' almost always leave people happier than when they arrived.
Emocling has lived in Yellowknife for five years, moving here from her native Manila, Philippines.
She says much of what she does is second nature, since she has used such products herself. Most of the people she advises are getting their first facial.
In Manila she and other female staff were taught how to apply make-up when they worked in a department store. Because of the bright fluorescent lights, if staff did not use makeup they appeared pale and ghoulish, said Emocling.
Her perception of others is not clouded by her line of work. Emocling said she never feels tempted to tell strangers what they could do to help their skin.
"No, I don't do that. If they ask I'd tell them, but I'm not going to go up to them and tell them they need a facial."
The 'express facials' Emocling does are part of a host of feel-good, look-good services the store offers. Upstairs, two estheticians provide massage, full facials and body rubs.
Those of you who think only women deserve to be pampered, think again. There's a whole line of cleansers and moisturizers for men.
