Inuvik (Apr 27/01) - An Inuvik man's attempt to outdrive police came to an end Sunday night when he drove into a RCMP suburban set up to block his path.
The police suburban was not damaged, and Cpl. Jeff Hurry of the Inuvik detachment said the driver was slowing down when the crash occurred and was travelling under 10 km\h.
The 31-year-old has been charged with failing to stop for police, impaired driving, dangerous driving and assaulting a peace officer.
The assault charge arose when the man allegedly drove at an officer standing on the road flagging him to stop.
"There were a number of children playing on the road, in puddles and riding their bikes when this happened," said Hurry.
"The public really assisted in helping us, we received two separate phone calls about this guy."
Although Hurry said the incident never turned into a high-speed chase, the fact that it took place in a residential area, Alder Drive, meant it could have had serious consequences.
The man has also been charged under the Motor Vehicles Act for driving with no insurance or registration.
