Yellowknife (Apr 25/01) - The cost of living crept up in March, according to Statistics Canada figures released by the Government of the Northwest Territories Bureau of Statistics.

The Yellowknife all-items consumer price index for March was 1.4 per cent higher than a year earlier.

The overall price increase in Yellowknife of 1.4 per cent between March 2000 and March 2001 can be largely attributed to a five per cent increase in the purchase and leasing of automotive vehicles. The largest contributor in offsetting this annual price increase was a 7.3 per cent decline in inter-city transportation.

By comparison, the annual price increase was 2.5 per cent for Canada, 2.3 per cent for Edmonton and 2.5 per cent for Whitehorse. In Yellowknife, prices for consumer goods and services in March were .3 per cent lower compared to February. Contributing to this overall decline were lower prices recorded for the women's clothing, fresh vegetables and fresh or frozen beef.

Increases in prices of inter-city transportation, personal-care supplies and equipment and fuel oil and other fuel prevented the all-items index from dropping even lower.
