Inuvik (Mar 09/01) - A Paulatuk man was sentenced to 26 months in jail following a shooting in the community Feb. 15.

Ian Peter Green, 26, appeared in court in Inuvik Monday for a show-cause hearing, but proceedings were put into territorial court when he pleaded guilty to a number of charges.

Crown counsel Brent Lepage said some of the charges stem from before the Feb. 15 incident.

"There's two sets of charges. One was assaults on his girlfriend," Lepage said. "That happened before, and then in February he basically was charged with assault with a weapon, which was a .222 rifle, which he discharged towards people -- didn't hurt anybody -- and possession of a firearm while prohibited from doing so."

Green was also charged with breach of an undertaking, which stemmed from the previous charges.

Lepage said Green had a previous criminal record dating back to 1988.

"There was some violence in his past record," Lepage said.
