Yellowknife (Mar 09/01) - A 21-year-old Yellowknife man will serve a 60-day intermittent sentence for trafficking two ounces of marijuana.

Darren McNabb, arrested by RCMP during Operation Guiness, entered a plea of guilty on one count of trafficking marijuana in territorial court Tuesday.

The offence occurred on March 1, 2000 at a residence in Kam Lake when McNabb engaged in a drug transaction with the RCMP undercover civilian agent.

Defense lawyer Andrew Fox argued the offence happened a year ago when McNabb was having severe financial troubles but is now employed full-time and has turned his life around.

"Prior to his employment he had financial difficulties and began running around with the wrong crowd.

"He became involved with drugs at the time and became involved with trafficking to support his habit," Fox said.

Judge Brian Bruser took into account that McNabb now holds a steady, full-time job and is a valuable asset to his employer.

McNabb will serve his 60-day sentence on weekends at the Yellowknife Correctional Centre.
