Rankin Inlet (Mar 07/01) - The celebration of International Women's Day will take a slightly different approach this year in Rankin Inlet.

The Kataujaq Society, in partnership with the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre and the Community Learning Centre, will be holding a special luncheon on March 8 to mark the internationally recognized event.

The society's Evelyn Thordarson says the luncheon is open to women and their daughters, school aged or older.

"It really is a celebration of mothers and their daughters we're holding to help mark International Women's Day," says Thordarson.

"The luncheon will begin at noon, be on a first come, first serve basis, with room to accommodate 100 people."

Rankin Inlet has held a different event every year to celebrate International Women's day.

The day's purpose is to recognize the work women have done to improve their living conditions, raise community awareness regarding women's issues and celebrate the achievements and victories of women.

It is also a day for women to speak out on issues affecting them and celebrate both their strength and wisdom.

"Every women's group across the North does something to mark International Women's Day and, in past years in Rankin, we've released balloons, walked around the hamlet, those types of things.

"This year we wanted to mark the day as more of a celebration and that's why we decided to hold the luncheon for mothers and their daughters."

Anyone seeking more information on the special International Women's Day luncheon may phone either the Kataujaq Society or the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre for further details.
