Yellowknife (Mar 30/01) - Police believe the $270,000 worth of cocaine they seized early Wednesday morning in downtown Yellowknife was destined for patrons of this weekend's Caribou Carnival.

"People that deal drugs knew there would be a larger market in town this weekend so they bring more in because it's easier to sell," said Staff\Sgt. Dave Grundy of the Yellowknife RCMP.

"The mood is festive, the city's population swells and this is what happens.

"I'm not trying to taint Caribou Carnival, but this is what happens at gatherings."

One person was arrested and later released when members of the drug section seized the one-kilogram bag of cocaine and a large, undisclosed amount of money.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid.

Grundy said the cocaine came north from Alberta, but he isn't sure where it originated.

The seizure was a result of follow-up investigations that have been ongoing since the conclusion of Operation Guiness, the RCMP's drug investigation that resulted in some 50 people arrested for trafficking cocaine and other drugs.
