Inuvik (Mar 23/01) - A firm has been picked to design a plan to make Inuvik more eye-catching.

Gibbs and Brown Landscape Architects of Edmonton was chosen by Inuvik's community beautification committee to come up with a long-term plan to beautify the town.

Brian Desjardins, tourism/fund-raising co-ordinator for the town, who is on the committee, said the community beautification efforts so far -- such as flower pots and banners -- have been short term. But the Edmonton company will come up with a plan to guide the community for the next five years or so.

Some Gibbs and Brown representatives are coming to the town this June. Desjardins said the head of the firm intends to spend a few weeks here on his own.

A workshop will be held while the firm's reps are here. Desjardins explained this will be part of efforts to involve the community.

"It's very important the community be involved with the development of the plan," Desjardins said. "This spring we're hopefully going to identify opportunities to improve the quality of design and development within the key areas of the community, like downtown, highway corridor, community gateways, tourist information areas."

Aside from this study, plans are under way for continuing beautification efforts this spring. Desjardins said the flower pots and banners will be set out again, and another business pick-up day will be held. He said he's considering having some work done to the gateway entrance.
