Yellowknife (Feb 09/01) - Folks looking for family fun can pencil in the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre for the next six Sundays.
Amazing Family Sundays, the event formerly known as just plain Amazing Sundays, kicks off its latest session this week.
Wendy Stephenson, the museum's co-curator of education, says the popular series changed its name last year because "we wanted to get more families to come."
The next six Sundays will feature different activities for the entire family, ranging from videos to art demonstrations.
Sylvie Boisclair, French Consultant for the Museum, says the program is deliberately eclectic.
"There's a little bit of culture, a little bit of history, art, natural history," said Boisclair.
"We try to cover a wide variety of topics and we try to make it something that the whole family can enjoy," said Stephenson.
Local groups have also pitched in for some of the Sunday events.
One of the exhibits is designed to coincide with Heritage Day next week, while another called Around the world in a day is designed to highlight "the various groups who have contributed to the livelihood of the city."
This Sunday's presentation, which has a Valentine's Day theme, features a French film, Kirikou et la Sorciere. Based on an African folk tale, the animated movie has won "many, many awards," said Boisclair.
Boisclair, who is supervising the first four Sundays, says she is especially looking forward to a presentation March 4 by local butterfly experts Mike Fournier and Dave Tilden.
"They tell the most incredible stories," says Boisclair.
Following this week's Valentine's Day-themed video, visitors will have the opportunity to pen their own Japanese love messages, courtesy of local resident Aya Suzuki.
