Inuvik (Feb 09/01) - A whole slew of events are being planned as the local campus prepares to celebrate Aurora College Week.
The fun kicks off Feb. 19 with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., plus an assembly that afternoon.
The snow carvings will also be started Feb. 19. Student counsellor Jack Cann explained anywhere from six to eight carvings will be made in front of the college.
Cann said that instructions on carving snow, as well as tips on easy designs, will be provided.
Cann said he's never done snow carving before, but he'd like to be involved in this event.
Judging of the snow carvings will take place Feb. 22.
Also taking place Feb. 22 is story readings. Cann said the college has inherited some story books for children, and has decided to give them away at this event.
An open house and silent auction takes place Feb. 23, though Cann emphasized that all events during the week are open to the public. Booths may be set up during the open house, and tours will be offered.
The last event will be the rummage sale Feb. 24. The college may either sell tables or accept donations. Proceeds will go to this year's graduating class.
Cann said officials hope some representatives from the oil and gas industry will drop in, as well as many members of the general public.
"The whole week is designed to make people more familiar with what the college does, who does it, how to get things done here and how to use our resources," Cann said.
"In return, our students filter back through the community through the contacts that come in here, so it's a two-way street."
Another event Cann said he's looking forward to is the millennium slide and talk show by Julian Tomlinson, who took part in the Arctic leg of the Millennium Trek last year as part of efforts to open the Trans Canada Trail.
The slide show takes place the evening of Feb. 20.
