Fort Simpson (Feb 09/01) - An 18-year-old man from Slave Lake, Alta., has been charged with assault causing bodily harm following the beating of a Fort Simpson man last Friday evening.

The victim, who is in his late 50s, was first taken to the Fort Simpson Medical Centre, and medevaced early Saturday morning to the University of Alberta Hospital due to breathing problems.

"He turned out to be OK," RCMP Const. Ken McKinnon said Monday. "He should have been home last night or early today."

The incident occurred after 11 p.m. in a recreation centre washroom, during a public dance. Both parties had consumed alcohol, according to Const. McKinnon.

As of Monday it was still unknown what had provoked the fight, he added.

The injured man, who had been punched and kicked in the head, had to have a tube inserted in his throat and air artificially pumped into his lungs until he arrived at the hospital in Edmonton.

The accused is scheduled to appear in territorial court March 19.
