Census 2001

National survey set to begin

Northern News Services
Yellowknife (Feb 05/01) - The first federal Census is about to take place in Nunavut.

Isabelle Renaud, a communications agent for Census 2001, said the national survey that takes place every five years was about to get under way in Canada's newest territory.

"It's the first one since the creation of Nunavut," said Renaud, from Statistics Canada's regional office in Montreal.

Renaud also said Statistics Canada, the federal department responsible for the survey, had decided to hire up to 150 territorial residents to assist in their data gathering.

"In the past, we hired interpreters to work with interviewers from the south, but this time we're hiring people from the North," said Renaud.

She said they had already compiled a list of surveyors and were in the process of ensuring Census takers were properly trained and ready to go.

Nunavut residents in all communities will be targeted from mid-February until the end of March. The information gathered provides the federal government with information about Canadians.

Questions revolve around living arrangements, daily activities, citizenship, employment and ethnicity.
