Yellowknife (Feb 28/01) - Last Tuesday evening an awards ceremony took place at St. Patrick high school recognizing students for their outstanding achievements.
The awards ceremony was organized by Michele Thoms with the help of some other teachers. The awards ceremony takes place whenever the school has time to recognize those who do things both in and outside of school - like figure skating.
"There are a lot of students who aren't recognized for what they do in the community," said Thoms, who added the awards serve as evidence of their success in extra-ciricular activities.
Some of the students in the school received certificates, others received banners for their winnings in sporting events and several received a pat on the back and applause.
Christa Stuckless and Mellisa Ward received an award for winning a $1,000-$2,000 scholarship to the University of Alberta. These awards will be put into their portfolios to show what they did. Other students in the school were recognized for taking part in a recent welding course - there were 33 students who took the welding course and all of them passed.
Seventeen St. Pat's students participated in a "thinkfast" - where they went without food for 25 hours to raise money for the homeless and people in need. The 17 students who participated in the event received all of their CALM hours (Career and Life Management) for participating in the event. The top money raisers for "thinkfast" were Eddie Peart at $230, Caylaine Gueguen at $150 and Cole Bouchard at $115.
Thoms hopes to hold the event on a regular basis - once a month to recognize as many students as they can can for what they do both in and outside of the school.
