Inuvik (Jan 29/01) - A Grade 6 student from Inuvik was in critical condition in an Edmonton hospital after a snowmobile collided with a vehicle on Stringer Road late last week.

Inuvik RCMP said the snowmobile, carrying two male youths, was attempting to cross the road at about 3:40 p.m. on Jan. 25 when the collision occurred.

The passenger of the snowmobile, a Grade 6 student at Sir Alexander Mackenzie School, was medevaced to Edmonton for further examination.

The driver of the snowmobile was treated for minor injuries in Inuvik.

Corporal Tim Beland wouldn't say if the youths were wearing helmets.

Sir Alexander Mackenzie School Principal Bernie MacLean said everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for the boy's recovery.

"All we know is that he was seriously hurt and medevaced to Edmonton. I've contacted the family and asked them to contact me just as soon as they have any information."

MacLean said teachers are keeping a close watch on students for any signs of grief or depression.

"If we feel it's a necessity we certainly will be bringing counsellors in, but at this point in time we're just waiting for further information."
