Yellowknife (Jan 26/01) - A police chase that reached high speeds on the Dettah ice road came to an end late Tuesday night after police forced the driver of a stolen truck to veer off the road, plowing into a snowbank.
Several police cruisers were pursuing the truck from Yellowknife's downtown area, across the Detah ice road, into Detah village and halfway back to Yellowknife on the ice road.
"Once they noticed we were following them it definitely turned into a chase," said Cpl. Brian Glover, who was one of several officers at the scene at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday night.
When asked what speeds the vehicles reached during the chase, Glover said he couldn't give an exact number, but that on the ice road they were travelling "very fast."
The truck had been stolen at 6 a.m. that morning and at the time of the evening chase was occupied by one adult and two youths.
Criminal charges are pending. The chase started shortly after 9 p.m. when the police received a cell phone call from a person reporting they had seen the stolen truck driving around downtown.
Several police cruisers monitored the situation that eventually ended with the truck plowing into a snowbank as four police vehicles surrounded it.
"We basically forced (the truck) off the road," said Glover.
"It was all done very safely and no one was injured."
An RCMP identification officer was called out to the scene to photograph what happened and the occupants of the vehicle were taken to the police station.
