Inuvik (Dec 08/00) - After a break of more than a month, the Inuvik Youth Centre has re-opened its doors.
Tom Hamilton is one of two part time supervisors at the centre, said things are going fine.
"We have a huge number of youth come in here every night," Hamilton said. "At one time we had 42 kids."
The centre is open Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6-10:30 p.m. It's open Friday and Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. It is not open Wednesday.
The centre was closed due to staffing problems and a lack of direction. A youth committee has been elected to advise the youth centre board.
John Charlie is a member of the committee. He said he comes into the centre a lot, and that many others do as well.
"It's good," Charlie said. "It's better than being on the streets."
Board member Tracy MacPherson agreed. She said she's been in a few times and things seem to be going well.
MacPherson said, "If you go by at five to 6 p.m., you'll notice there's kids lined up waiting to get in, so I think they're happy."
Hamilton said the centre fills an important role.
"It's beneficial to everyone in the community."
He said the centre is seeking donations of money and time.
