Beanie crazy

Cuddly toys are on wish lists of many Inuvik kids

Inuvik (Dec 08/00) - So, what do children around here want for Christmas?

One person who could help answer that question would be Santa Claus, but other sources will need to be consulted, seeing as calls to the North Pole were not returned. (No doubt Santa is quite busy making his list and checking it twice.)

First off is Jenessa Bourque, who would like a beanie baby, or more than one, sitting under the tree come Christmas morn.

Jenessa got her first beanie on her birthday about a year ago. Since then she, along with her mother Juanita, have become hooked on the popular items. Jenessa currently has 80 beanie babies and buddies in her collection.

Her favourite is Gigi, a black poodle, and a bear named Fuzz. Jenessa said, "I like the babies because they're cute and cuddly."

Rexall Drugs is the only store in Inuvik which sells beanie babies. Leann Wolfe explained the beanies have been available there for more than a year and have been quite popular.

Juanita Bourque agreed, saying she had recently taken part in a sale on the beanies at the store.

"It was beanie-mania down there," she said.

Of course, Inuvik children aren't just asking Santa for beanie babies. Dave Armstrong, manager of Home Hardware, said that yo-yos and Pokemons have been very popular items there.

"The yo-yo thing happened this year," Armstrong said. "It's not really getting down to the big time yet. But we've sold all our yo-yos."

He said Cailou dolls, based on the television show, have sold well. As well, Armstrong explained, "The remote control cars will be big closer to Christmas."

For his part, Doug Robertson, department manager at Northern, said Playstation 2 is the most popular toy among older kids. The item has sold out there.

He said younger kids have really taken to cotton candy machines.

"That's been a hot item," Robertson said.

He said old favourites like Barbie and Lego are still doing well.
