Arviat (Dec 06/00) - Nunavut MP Nancy Karetak-Lindell is ready to represent the entire territory, and economic development in Kivalliq is high on her list of priorities.

"Economic development is a big possibility in our region and one I intend to pursue," says Liberal incumbent Karetak-Lindell, who was re-elected Nov. 27.

"Having attended the mining symposium in Rankin Inlet myself, I agree that transportation is very much a key for success in the Kivalliq Region.

"In fact, I am looking forward to lobbying on behalf of the Keewatin Chamber of Commerce and other business people on ways we can stimulate economic activity in our region."

Karetak-Lindell says Ottawa has been receptive to Nunavut issues she has raised.

She says having been the first member for a new territory, and being involved in such a historic event as the creation of Nunavut, has created much interest among her political peers.

"I've certainly seen a federal commitment to assisting the new territory as much as possible, so that we can learn to be on our own."

"Everyone fully accepts that Nunavut needs help in becoming self-reliant and that commitment has been there from the federal ministers from the start."

Karetak-Lindell says the Nunavut Government would like to see better funding arrangements for formula financing, placing more emphasis on need than per capita.

She intends to use the ringing endorsement she received in the federal election to speak on behalf of the majority of Nunavummiut and address issues important to them.

"I totally intend to use capturing 70 per cent of the overall vote to give me that much stronger of a voice."

Before Karetak-Lindell can be sworn in and join her 300 fellow members in Ottawa, a writ has to be received from Elections Canada.

That process can be time consuming when you live in Nunavut.

"The last time, mine took at least a month. Every ballot has to be received and verified by Elections Canada, so I'll consider myself lucky if I'm able to be sworn in before Christmas."
