Side Door stretches its resources

Yellowknife (Dec 20/00) - In an effort to cut costs, the Side Door youth centre co-ordinator is recruiting for volunteers to help renovate the new building.

"We're really trying to stretch that money as far as we can to get the most out of it," said co-ordinator Kevin Laframboise.

Laframboise is hoping to accomplish this by recruiting accredited trades people to volunteer their time.

The $252,527 the centre has to work with is a lot of money, and it is sufficient for renovation work needed at the new centre, located at the old Mine Rescue Centre.

"But we could accomplish more if we had some of this volunteer help," he said.

The funding came in October 1999 from the City of Yellowknife.

Laframboise hopes to find the volunteers before issuing tenders for the paid contract work by the end of this year.

"If we get people to come in and do certain parts of the building, then we won't have to get the paid contractors to do those parts," he said. The renovation work involves the drywalling, carpeting, painting, electrical, plumbing and carpentry.

Laframboise welcomes accredited trade people to work in "anything involved in renovating a building."

The recruiting effort is specifically for accredited trades people, he noted, due to liability.

Once completed, the 4,700 square foot building will include a study area/computer room, a fireplace and a congregational area. Part of the renovations will be to expand the second floor over the garage.

On the main floor, the centre will have a pool table room, a concession stand for patrons, a non-alcoholic bar and a game and video room.
