Resident disarms gun-toting man

Yellowknife (Dec 22/00) - An unidentified resident of Sachs Harbour is being credited with disarming a man who fired several shots from a rifle.

Inuvik RCMP Cpl. Jeff Hurry said a 28-year-old man was arrested in the early morning hours of Dec. 19 after several shots were fired in the Banks Island hamlet.

"The incident came to a successful conclusion when a local resident was able to negotiate the rifle away from the suspect," said Hurry in a press release. No-one was injured in the incident. No other information was available at deadline.

RCMP from Inuvik travelled to Sachs Harbour to arrest the man.

The man appeared in court in Inuvik where he pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm. He sentenced to five months in jail. He was also prohibited from possessing firearms for two years and will also serve one year probation.
