Yellowknife (Nov 06/00) - Students who lived in the former Akaitcho and Stringer hall residences will have a chance to renew old friendships next summer.
Akaitcho Hall, located in Yellowknife, was home to out-of-town high school and vocational students who attended Sir John Franklin high school from 1958 to 1994. They came from around the North, from the Hudson's Bay area to Cambridge Bay, Aklavik, the South Slave and Deh Cho regions.
Former Akaitcho resident Tony Whitford, who is now the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, is leading a committee that hopes to organize a reunion for all former Akaitcho students, teachers, superintendents and supervisors.
Although plans are still in the early stages, Whitford said the event is scheduled for June 30 to July 1.
"We're just trying to locate people and trying to decide what to do and see where we can hold things," he said.
Roy Inglangasuk is hoping to schedule a summer reunion for former Stringer Hall residents as well.
About a thousand Sir Alexander MacKenzie school and Samuel Hearne secondary school students lived at Stringer Hall, located in Inuvik, between 1959 and the early 1970s. The building has since been demolished.
Before plans can proceed, however, Inglangasuk has to get an organizing committee together.
"We're still having problems getting together a group to organize it. I do have some (people), but we need more."
