Rankin Inlet (Nov 29/00) - Northern cadets wanted to find out how things were done in the South

So 15 members of the 3019 Rankin Inlet Canadian Army Cadets Corps. spent three days in Calgary, Alta. recently as part of an inter-provincial cultural exchange program.

Rankin Company Commander Paul Douglas, who accompanied the cadets on their trip, says the host corps work out of the Mewata Armoury in Calgary.

He says the Rankin group had originally been considering doing its own fund-raising for an exchange with cadets from Petawawa, Ont.

"When we started our inquiries, we found out about this program out of Calgary," says Douglas.

"They were looking for a Northern exchange and we were selected."

Fifteen Calgary cadets will visit the Kivalliq early in the new year.

Dedication among the ranks

The Department of National Defence picked up the tab for the Rankin group's journey.

Rankin cadet instructor Tim Hinds says the group of cadets is looking forward to their journey.

"It's been a constant stream of questions coming from them since our cadet season started about three months ago," says Hinds.

There are 24 cadets participating in the Rankin program this year and Hinds says they are focused and enthusiastic.

"Our cadets this year are dedicated.

"Last year we had 40 sign up, but only 20 or so would come regularly.

"It used to be that to register for cadets, you just walked in, but we've changed that. We'll be having another recruiting intake in January."
