Yellowknife (Nov 29/00) - Fred Turner, the Canadian Alliance Party candidate, came in a close third with 2,283 votes.

Turner's campaign headquarters on election night in the Panda II Mall consisted mainly of his close supporters watching national election coverage on television and listening to local coverage on the radio.

"It appeared as though I was going to do better. For the most part it was fun but it is very hard when you get commitments from people and then are let down." The son of a Cree mother and a British father, the 55 year-old candidate said his late entry in the race had a lot to do with his defeat.

"I came in so late in the race, I could have helped the national office and they probably could have helped me," if an Alliance candidate was known in the North earlier, he added. His future plans are not known at this point and as for the Liberal outcome in the NWT; "I guess the people have spoken and if that is what they want then that is what they will get," he said.
