Kivalliq (Nov 27/00) - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is developing "a co-ordinated approach to management" of resources in the western Hudson Bay region.

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. wildlife manager Bert Dean said a DFO-sponsored conference in Winnipeg at the end of October was an opportunity to share "different approaches on how to work together."

The conference drew Community Government and Transportation Deputy Minister Mike Ferris, HTO presidents from all seven Kivalliq hamlets and representatives from the Kivalliq Inuit Association and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.

Working groups discussed water, wildlife, marine species and fish, land development and its impact on the ecosystem, and concerns about the environment, animals and meat quality.

Dean said the conference was an opportunity to learn about research projects and contact other groups with an interest in Hudson Bay.

He described the conference as a successful step towards DFO's goal of a more co-ordinated management approach of the area.

"DFO seems to be listening to Inuit hunters who have vast experience on the land," he said. "Overall, it was a positive experience and a learning experience for our Kivalliq representatives."
