Inuvik (Nov 24/00) - Co-operation is needed to develop the Beaufort Delta and the entire NWT, the Canadian Alliance candidate for Western Arctic says.

Fred Turner said that, in recent times, companies have been allowed to come in, take what they want, and then leave without leaving many permanent benefits behind.

"If there's development happening, it should happen in conjunction with government," Turner said.

He said a common sense approach is needed for economic development. He used as an example the possibility of building a road alongside the proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline, and said it should be a "reasonable condition" for companies involved in the pipeline to assist with such a road.

"A road along the pipeline would be just great."

Turner said funding to improve transportation is a part of the Alliance platform. "I intend to make sure the Northwest Territories receives a substantial portion of any proposed infrastructure funding.

"The levels of investment by previous Liberal and Conservative governments has been grossly inadequate and might even be characterized as shameful neglect."

Turner said he's the best qualified candidate to represent Western Arctic residents.

"I could be a much stronger voice."

He pointed out the Alliance would repeal the Liberals' gun control law.

As well, Turner said resident in the North should be offered the same level of communications services that are offered in the south.

"There's a need for improved communications in the North."

Turner said he's found a lot of support in Inuvik.

"It looks like we've got a pretty solid base of support everywhere," he said. "We're doing what we can and we're getting our message out as best we can."
