Communities gearing up to head to the polls

Yellowknife (Nov 20/00) - The nominees for mayor and council in the 12 hamlets holding elections Dec. 11 have been announced.

Tulita voters will choose between Rocky Norwegian and Alvin Yalee for mayor. Seven candidates are after five council positions; Frank Andrew, Rosa Etchinelle, Celeste Goulet, Lorraine Doctor, Edward MacCauley, Richard MacCauley and Helen Squirrel.

Fort Resolution has the largest number of candidates. Nineteen nominees, 12 male and seven female, are running for eight council positions.

Mayor Richard Simon is not seeking re-election. Candidates to succeed him are Violet Beaulieu, Larry Berard, Gloria Biscaye, Emilie Bjornson, Maurice Boucher, Paul Boucher, Dianne Giroux, Stan Johnson, Cecil Lafferty, Frances Mandeville, Violet Mandeville, Darin McKay, Dave McNabb, Margaret Miersch, Lloyd Norn, Gus Pasowisty, Arthur Sanderson, Jerry Sanderson and Patrick Simon. There are 335 registered voters.

Once the Fort Resolution council is elected, all eight members will vote to choose the new mayor.

There will be no election in Aklavik. Mayor Richard Gordon's term expires next year. Councillors Mary Ann Stewart, Evelyn Storr, Foster Arey and Neil Heron were elected by acclamation.

In Enterprise, seven candidates are running for six council positions. The winners will select the mayor. Incumbent Winnie Cadieux is seeking another term. She is up against Bernard J. Boissonneau, Anne Leskiw, Armella Mercredi, Joseph Mercredi, Karl Mueller and Cecile Richards.

In Rae-Edzo, incumbent mayor Fred Behrens wants another. His challenger is Eddie Koyina. Eleven are running for council: Violet Camsell-Blondin (also running for chief of the Dogrib Rae Band), Eddie Camille, Noel Drybones, Gary Blackneck, Joe Erasmus, Joe Eyakfwo, Luke Grosco, Celine Kogiak, Rosa Mantla, James Rabesca and Joseph Zoe. A total of 947 voters are registered.
