Inuvik (Nov 17/00) - Elections Canada has set up an office here.

The office in a small community hall marks the first time Elections Canada has set up shop outside of Yellowknife in the Western Arctic riding.

Topsy Cockney, an additional assistant returning officer, says many people have dropped by.

"It's a good convenience for people," Cockney said Tuesday.

She said she has handled many revisions to the voters list and voter registrations. Special ballots are also being offered.

"For special ballots, we give any voter an opportunity to vote," Cockney said.

Special ballots will be offered to patients at the hospital, and that a special ballot will also be taken to the Aurora College campus.

"I'm off to Holman and Paulatuk today for one-hour training in each community for the deputy returning officers," Cockney said.

Advance polls are set for Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk on Friday, Saturday and Monday from noon to 8 p.m. The advance poll in Inuvik is at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex. The poll in Tuk is in the hamlet chambers.
