Yellowknife (Nov 15/00) - Groundwork has begun in Dettah and Ndilo for two new elders homes.
The homes are part of a project run by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation housing division in partnership with the NWT Housing Corporation.
"We're all pretty happy that it's come to a reality and we're doing something for our seniors," said Jerry Cheezie, housing manager for the Yellowknives Dene.
Construction of the two seniors homes, priced between $600,000 and $700,000 each, is the result of five years' effort. The homes are expected to fill a gap in the community for seniors housing, especially for elders who are forced to live with their families, and free up homes for other families.
Each of the complexes will have five one-bedroom apartments that each feature a large living room, kitchen and washroom, with shared laundry facilities. Construction is expected to be completed by next summer.
