The quiet campaign

Yellowknife (Nov 15/00) - The NDP have, so far, been running the highest profile Western Arctic campaigns.
That hasn't been too hard to do. After the nomination of candidates and presentation of Northern platforms, the other three parties in the race have been all but invisible.
Since he launched his campaign two weeks ago, Bevington has been from Yellowknife to Inuvik and back again, with a stop in Hay River to attack the Liberal record on health.
At this point, the Western Arctic Elections Canada office -- led by media savvy chief electoral officer David Connelly -- has received more media attention than most of the candidates.
In the Inn The Yellowknife Inn is doing its part to give voters a chance to review their choices.
The hotel is hosting a meet-the-candidates event Nov. 21 starting at 7 p.m.
"There will be no debates, no speeches -- this is just a chance for the public to speak to the candidates," said organizer Barbara Bird.
Delta showdown
Inuvik will play host to the first in a series of all-candidates forums tomorrow night, but only three candidates will be in attendance.
Canadian Alliance candidate Fred Turner, who visited the community last week, will not be there. An Alliance official said Monday Turner had asked to participate in the debate electronically, but had not yet heard whether that would be possible.
Where they are this week:
Fred Turner, Alliance
Dennis Bevington, NDP
Ethel Blondin-Andrew, Liberal
Bruce McLaughlin, PC
