Yellowknife (Nov 15/00) - Like all stories that come to an end, the long journey towards completion of a new book is nearing the final chapter.

Since April 1999 a committee of the Yellowknife Seniors Society has been collecting and compiling stories of the city and the people who have called it home.

"The book is going to be a fine read for people, even for the people who've moved here recently," said volunteer contributor Terry Foster.

Yellowknife Tales will be the result of much work. The committee spent two months planning, then met at the Chamber of Mines boardroom every week or two.

Volunteers were responsible for interviewing storytellers and finding photos.

"The seniors wanted to commemorate the work, the things that people did, the people who built this town," said Foster.

He said about 650 photos have been scanned and expects the book will contain the life stories of about 100 people.

Even after living in Yellowknife for the past 25 years, Foster said it was an opportunity for him to learn more about the people he has heard so much about.

Stories came in from everywhere, including all parts of Canada and from as far away as Texas and even Australia.

Yellowknife Tales is expected to be available in early December.

It will be published by Outcrop Communications.

The project was made possible through financial support of several Yellowknife organizations and businesses and the Government of Canada Millennium Fund. All profits from the book will return to the society.
