Inuvik (Nov 10/00) - Hundreds of people crowded into the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex last Saturday to feast and spend some money.

The occasion was the 14th annual Ducks Unlimited Auction and Banquet.

"The event couldn't really happen unless we had all the local sponsoring," said Michael Fabijan, chair of the Inuvik Committee of Ducks Unlimited.

"A lot of people in town give us items and a lot of items are sent up here from Ducks Unlimited," he said.

"It's a big thing for the town."

A total of 230 tickets were sold for the event.

"It was a great event, the best ever," Fabijan said. "It was quite a bit of fun."

Mike Muller, another member of the Inuvik committee, said Saturday night was "super."

"We sold out, like we do every year, and we had lots of enthusiastic people. We had many old time supporters of Ducks Unlimited that have been coming for years and years," Muller said.

"It was a good mix of new support and continued support, both in terms of people there and in terms of sponsors."

He said that many people hung around until the rec centre closed for the night.

Muller said there are actually several events within the auction.

"There are raffles for different prizes, there are silent auctions, and live auctions," Muller said.

"We had a great auctioneer this year who came up from Saskatchewan," he said.

"Ducks Unlimited has dinners in large centres. The great thing about that is, in the Northwest Territories, all the money that's raised here stays here," he pointed out. "They put it toward research and habitat projects."

Muller said, "it's a way for people to donate money to habitat management and wildlife management, and also have a lot of fun."
