Projects get federal grants

Ottawa (Oct 09/00) - Four projects in Nunavut are in line for $151,200 in federal grants from the Canadian Rural Partnership pilot projects initiative.

Nancy Karetak-Lindell, MP for Nunavut, said the funding demonstrates that the federal government "is listening to what rural and remote Canadians have been saying about the challenges facing their communities."

The Health of Nunavut Website will get $12,500 to educate residents of the territory about health and social service issues and programs that address the issues.

Tools for Community Building has been awarded $53,600 to develop skills of people working in a community and volunteer organizations.

The project will provide opportunities to build informal learning networks within and between communities, encouraging people to share their culture and traditional knowledge via tele-conference and the Internet.

A demonstration project based in Igloolik on videoconferencing, education and community development will get $50,000.

The announcement also earmarked $35,100 for the Nestlik Miniature Collection.

The project will develop a collection of traditional products designed and used by Inuit for survival and recreation.

The items will be produced and marketed in the community and sold as limited editions.
