Yellowknife (Oct 13/00) - Yellowknife city council met for the last time with full powers this Tuesday before the Oct 16 election and unanimously approved contracts for sewage and paving projects scheduled for the next two years.

Council gave the go-ahead to local contracting companies Reid Crowther and Partners Ltd. and Ferguson Simek Clark to continue their surveys before the snow falls again.

No dollar figures were tagged to the contracts.

Mayor Dave Lovell said it's up to the new council to decide on money.

"We just wanted to clear up who we're dealing with," said Lovell. "We wanted to get things moving before it snows."

Reid Crowther and Partners Ltd was awarded the contract for the sewer upgrading program.

The firm has worked on the city's sewage infrastructure since 1988 with a brief break in 1990.

Current city paving contract holders Ferguson Simek Clark were given the paving program contract.

This was the last fully legal council meeting. Council no longer has the power to tweak the budget.

"All that remains is some housekeeping at the next council meeting," said Lovell.

The last time the current council will meet is Oct 23.
