Yellowknife (Aug 09/00) - Windows broken in at least nine vehicles have their owners angry and police puzzled after a weekend vandalism spree.

Nancy Gardiner, a resident on School Draw, said the street looked like a war zone with several vehicles having broken side and rear windows.

"I was kind of peeved," she said upon finding the rear window of her mini-van shattered but still holding in place.

"I didn't really know what happened until I went up the road and noticed five vehicles, at least, that also had damage."

Police have nine official reports of broken vehicle windows but say plenty of others may not have been reported to them. Gardiner said she heard there were around 30 or 40 vehicles had been hit.

The RCMP haven't made any arrests and have no suspects.

"We have no idea what caused the damage," said RCMP Cpl. John Milner. "It was probably someone in a vehicle driving by."

Some victims suspect the damage may have been caused by a pellet gun.

Reports of vandalism came from School Draw, 52nd Street and Bigelow Crescent.

Patricia Cameron, customer service representative at All-West Glass, said she also had reports from people in downtown residential areas.

"Since 8 a.m. the phone has been ringing," she said Tuesday. "I thought it was really strange because every time I answered the phone it was another auto-glass request."
