Inuvik (Aug 25/00) - Lights, camera, action!

This was the scene last Friday at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex as about 40 children wrapped up the Rock and Rhythm Camp by putting on a talent show.

The event featured skits and kids playing along to their favourite songs.

One skit told the story of Peter Pan, complete with swordplay and plenty of other action aboard a ship.

Patricia Louie, 7, played the part of Wendy in the skit. She said her favourite part involved a punishment some unfortunate people faced.

"They had to jump off the plank," Louie recalled.

She also enjoyed it when she and other friends of Peter Pan had to climb up a mast and fend off their enemies.

"When we were up, we were throwing things down."

Louie revealed one of her friends used unusual ammunition by throwing down a teddy bear armed with a bomb.

All the kids rehearsed their acts earlier in the week, and Louie said this involved a lot of fun and goofing around.

Louie said the other acts at the talent show were good, especially "the rock and roll one, and when they were doing the Britney Spears one."

Day camp counsellor Mary Cummings said the children did everything themselves for the talent show.

"They came up with all the ideas, all the music, all the dance moves, all their costumes," Cummings said.

"They made all the wigs and ... they also had on the masks, the masquerade masks, with the feathers and the sequins," she said.

"It's exciting for them to get to go on stage and play around, be the star," Cummings said.

"I was pretty proud of them. It went off really well."

Day camp co-ordinator Sherrie Hodgson was "impressed" with the third talent show she's seen.

"They did a magnificent job," Hodgson said. "The kids were adorable and the staff put it together really well."
