Yellowknife ( Jun 09/00) - It was hard work but two Yellowknife students both earned silver medals at last weekend's Canada Skills Competition.

Kali Laing-Dixon and her partner Brie-Anne Jefferson, both Grade 10 students at Sir John Franklin high school, attended the 6th competition held in Quebec from June 2-6.

The competition is sponsored by non-profit organizations and offers youth a chance to hone their skills in trades and technology through competitions. Laing-Dixon and Jefferson took part in the TV and video production category. Jefferson attended her first national event last year, placing 6th for Internet Web Page design.

"We just went up to people and we ask them a question, made basically in four categories, and we interviewed people from each category," said Laing-Dixon.

"You actually have to use your time really appropriately because you have a certain amount of time to do it, and you just need to get it all done, make sure you plan it out.

"Ours had more interviews and stuff like that," said Jefferson.

As for sightseeing while in Quebec City, the girls headed to Old Quebec to walk around the Le Chateau Frontenac Fort.

"We got to meet a lot of different people from all over Canada," said Jefferson.

Other Yellowknife winners, who were given bronze medals, were Sir John students Gordon Stevenson for the job interview category and Ryan Byrne, who won in automotive service. Calvin Korchinos, 21, won for electrical wiring.
