Fort Simpson (Apr 21/00) - The Northwest Territories Power Corporation can still play a role in Fort Simpson by continuing to operate the distribution system, Mayor Norm Prevost said Tuesday.

"In fact, we've even mentioned to the Power Corp. that they should be distributing and doing the other things and leave someone who can (generate power) cheaper than them to do it," he said.

Prevost said this arrangement would help the two sides avoid a battle over the Power Corp's assets. The old diesel plant could be dismantled and sold, he added.

"They (the Power Corp.) can recover lots of that. All those engines are worth something to somebody somewhere," he said. "Even the oldest ones can be used somewhere. They've all got a value to them."

Prevost said Jupiter also has an offer before the village to provide the distribution, but if the Power Corp. assumes that role it would be a "win-win," and their regional office could remain here.

Officials from NTPC, including Jake Ootes, minister responsible for the Power Corp., could not be reached for comment prior to press deadline.
