Pangnirtung (Mar 20/00) - A 30-year-old man who allegedly shot and wounded a police officer in Pangnirtung made a brief court appearance last Wednesday afternoon.

Tony Evic appeared before Justice of the Peace Bill Riddell in Iqaluit and had his matters set over to the next in-custody court docket on April 4 at 9:30 a.m.

Evic, who is set to appear in Pangnirtung on other matters on March 28, has been charged with several offenses following the alleged shooting including assault causing bodily harm, resisting arrest, pointing a firearm and using a firearm during the commission of an offence.

All of the new matters will be spoken to during Evic's next appearance.

The officer who was shot, Const. Paul Descoteaux, received non-life threatening wounds and was medevaced to Iqaluit for surgery following the March 9 incident, and has since been sent on to a hospital in the south for further medical treatment.

The incident took place when Descoteaux and another member of the RCMP were called to attend to a domestic dispute.

While responding to the call, the officer allegedly encountered a man with a firearm at the residence and a struggle ensued which resulted in the gun discharging.

Evic will remain in custody until his next court date.
