Yellowknife (Dec 17/99) - Two former employees of the Dene Nation accused of stealing money from the national office appeared in territorial court Tuesday.

Helen Margaret Edjericon and Ethel Rose Liske have both been charged with one count each of fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and the indictable charge of breach of trust.

The charges stem from cheque-writing incidents that go as far back as April 1988.

The Dene Nation discovered about $90,000 was unaccounted for during an audit of their books this fall.

Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus refused to comment on the charges.

Cpl. Darcy Fleury of the RCMP G Division's commercial crime division, said the investigation started soon after the nation's internal audit.

The Yellowknife women, who were released on their own recognisance following their arrest, will reappear in court Jan. 25 to choose whether to be tried by judge and jury or judge alone.
