Yellowknife (Nov 10/99) - More than 100 Yellowknifers volunteered their time to help the legion prepare for Remembrance Day this year.
The local Air and Army Cadet organizations collected $6,000 for the Poppy Fund, and $20,000 was pledged to the fund by YK businesses and individuals.
Royal Canadian Legion 164 manager, Lorne Power, said the community support has been tremendous.
"We have had a Remembrance Day program in Yellowknife every year for 50 years," said Power.
"We couldn't have raised $26,000 if the public didn't support it. We have an entire community here showing their support, which ensures the Remembrance Day program will continue to be a vibrant part of our heritage."
Power said there will be 50 cadets from both Army and Air taking turns standing a 24-hour vigil at the Cenotaph.
Yellowknife is the only city in Canada that still holds to this tradition.
Thursday's Remembrance Day parade starts at 10 a.m., and a Remembrance Day service is scheduled for 11:00 at St. Patrick high school.
At the Legion Hall, a potluck supper gets under way at 2:00 that will continue through the night.
More than 40 local entertainers have volunteered to play at the event.
