IQALUIT (Aug 09/99) - The 52-year old Baker Lake man accused of shooting a police officer in the leg during a 15-hour standoff with RCMP earlier this year was in Justice of the Peace court in Iqaluit last week.

James Warren Maxwell made his first appearance following his 60-day psychiatric assessment before JP Susan Sammons last Friday.

Represented by duty counsel Marcus Weber, Maxwell's matter was set over to be spoken to before Justice Browne in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Aug. 17 at 9:30 a.m. A publication ban has been placed on the report detailing his psychiatric evaluation.

Maxwell was arrested on a total of nine charges, three counts of which were for attempted murder.

The standoff began on May 31 after the RCMP responded to a call of a disturbance at Maxwell's residence.
