NNSL (July 09/99) - Some Fort Liard elders could have the option of moving into a new seniors' complex by September.
A four-room building, a project initiated by the Metis Local 67, has been in the planning stages since last summer, according to president Ernie McLeod. Construction on the building, contracted to Arcan Construction, began on June 1. The project is funded by the government and it will be leased to the Housing Corp., according to McLeod.
"There's lots of elders here that have got no place to stay," he said. "Everybody's looking forward to completion and some place where we can keep the elders and keep an eye on them. That's why we're building right by the river front, so they have a river view and everything."
The type of care to be offered to seniors has yet to be determined, he said, adding that an arrangement will have to be reached with Deh Cho Health and Social Services in regards to potentially providing a staff person.
Kathy Tsetso, chief executive officer for Deh Cho Health and Social Services (DCHSS), said DCHSS doesn't have any money in its budget to provide nursing care. She also noted that the territorial government shut down all facilities under 10 beds three years ago.
"I can't see the department funding a four-bed facility," she said, adding that she had yet to be contacted about this new complex in Fort Liard.
On the other hand, a "supported-living" environment operated through a home-care program would be viable option, she said. There are people in the community being trained in the home-care program, Tsetso noted. They perform tasks such as housekeeping, making meals and assisting with personal care.
McLeod added that the Metis Local 67 board has also considered building single dwellings nearby to offer independent living for elders.
