NNSL (May 05/99) - Yellowknife's Subway restaurant was a busy place last Thursday when the RCMP, Lion's Club, Victim Services representatives and of course, hungry sandwich eaters, clogged the business.

April 29 was Victim Services Day at the NWT's lone Subway restaurant and $1,100 was raised to give to the charity organization.

"I think we tripled the amount from last year," said Subway owner Donna Williston.

"It fell on a good day too because a lot of soccer teams were already in town and stopping by."

This is the third year Subway has held the 11 a.m.- 7 p.m. charity event.

"Subway is very generous in the community," said Carol Macek, co-ordinator of the local Victim Services Program.

"They always give and not only to us."

RCMP officers were on-hand throughout the day volunteering their services to make sandwiches and clear tables.

"Victim Services plays an important role in the community and it's great to see a local business fund-raising for them," said Sgt. Phil Johnson, who spent his two-hour duty clearing and cleaning tables over the busy lunch hour.

And even though the wait was up to 20 minutes at some points during the day, customers remained in the line-up that extended the length of the entire restaurant.

"It's a good cause and it was worth waiting for," said lunch-goer Sherryl Lariviere.

"And in terms of fund-raising, it's a good idea and an easy way to support a cause," said Keith Lariviere.

For the first time, the Lion's Club was also involved with the day. They helped to sell pins that Subway had made and volunteered their time in the restaurant.

"We're offering our services in kind and helping out however we can," said Tim Jaworski, president of the local Lion's Club.

Victim Services Day is recognized at all Subways throughout Alberta on the same day as it is in Yellowknife.
