RCMP investigate attack on 19-year-old at private house party

NNSL (Mar 31/99) - A young Yellowknife woman was severely beaten Saturday night while at a house party, RCMP said.

Sgt. Marlin Degrand said the details surrounding the assault of the 19-year-old woman are still under review.

"We have a complaint from her that she was accosted by several individuals," Degrand said. "This took place at a private residence."

"The matter is still under investigation and no charges have been laid at this time," he said. "A number of individuals have been spoken to, but we are still tracking down more information."

The young woman has been treated and released from Stanton Regional Hospital.

A wild weekend

Police cells were full to bursting this weekend, as some carnival revellers took the celebration to the limits of the law.

Sgt. Marlin Degrand said the majority of those detained were jailed for public drunkenness.

"We lodged a total of 87 people in cells over the course of the weekend," Degrand said. "It was a really busy weekend for us."

"We had 63 adult males, 20 adult females and four youthful females," Degrand said. "The vast majority of those were lodged for various minor criminal offences or public intoxication and they were released without charges."

RCMP responded to dozens of calls over the weekend, Degrand said.

Ten runaway youths, 17 complaints of mischief, three minor thefts, three assaults, three calls for assistance, two liquor offences, one drug-related offence, six domestic disputes, one resisting arrest, six complaints of fights in progress and one assault with a weapon, Degrand said.

A 27-year-old Yellowknife resident was charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace, as well as breach of probation, following a drunken dispute at a residence.

"The incident occurred when two adult males were drinking in a private residence, when a dispute erupted between them," Degrand said. "There were no injuries involved."

Police are also seeking a man who had reported being robbed, last Thursday night, but left before police could get a statement from the man driving a late model Ford Windstar.

RCMP are also seeking the whereabouts of a Calgary traveller.
