NNSL (Mar 24/99) - Two Yellowknife residents were injured when an RCMP vehicle ran a red light while en route to hospital on March 13.

RCMP spokesperson Marlin Degrand said the officer was travelling between 20 and 40 kilometres per hour through the red light at the intersection of Norseman Drive and Franklin Ave., colliding with a GMC Jimmy.

Degrand said the officer was acting on an emergency when the collision occurred.

"He was transporting an injured person to the hospital," Degrand said.

Degrand said the officer was travelling with emergency lights and siren on, when he entered the intersection.

"Obviously, I wasn't the driver, so I don't know what (the driver) he was doing, but the responsibility is on everybody of course, to yield to an emergency vehicle," Degrand said.

"There is also a responsibility on the emergency vehicle to proceed with caution and clear any intersection safely."

"It's not up to me to determine fault, that's left up to the insurance adjuster."

Degrand said extensive damage was reported to the Blazer and both female occupants were treated for minor injuries.

"The two people in the other vehicle were taken to hospital, but both were treated and released."
