NNSL (Jan 22/99) - The federal government is launching a new toll-free helpline to assist Northerners having trouble with alcohol and substance abuse.

Western Arctic MP Ethel Blondin-Andrew, along with Dr. Gideon Koren, director of the Motherisk Program, were to be in Yellowknife today to launch the new helpline.

The new confidential information line will help answer questions about alcohol and substance abuse during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The service is in response to concerns expressed by Canadian women, their families and health-care providers. Where possible, callers will be referred to local resources based in their communities.

"As Secretary of State for Children & Youth, ensuring the health of our children through prevention is one of my highest priorities," Blondin Andrew said, adding, "The new Motherisk Alcohol & Substance Abuse Hotline is a creative way to service the North. The North requires innovative ways to reduce alcohol and substance abuse during pregnancy."

Motherisk was founded by Dr. Gideon Koren in 1985 to provide new and expectant mothers with evidence-based information and guidance on the potential risks facing the developing fetus or infant from exposure to drugs, chemicals, diseases, radiation and environmental agents.

Since its inception, Motherisk has counselled well over 100,000 callers. In a typical day, the Motherisk counselling centre handles about 150 calls from all parts of Canada and the United States.

The new service can be accessed by calling 1-800 FAS-INFO, or 1-800-327-4636.
