NNSL (Dec 11/98) - Northern hospitality is indeed a priority to longtime Yellowknifers Ernie Glowach and Conrad Dow.

Both are acting supervisors of the Home for the Homeless which recently opened on Nov. 2, 1998. The downtown home, located on 51st Street and 51st Avenue, accommodates 10 residents in the two-level flat.

After serious consideration, Tom Beaulieu, vice-president of the NWT Housing Association, decided to work on meeting the needs of having a safe haven for the homeless.

The Home for the Homeless welcomes anyone over 18 years of age. A log book is signed daily by tenants incomers or visitors. An average of 20 people come through the doors every day, either to help out with chores or simply hang out.

"It's usually a happy atmosphere," says Glowach.

Most residents in the home are from different settlements across the North as well as the south. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited.

When a person does come in intoxicated, they are offered alternatives, such as the detox centre.

Funds from local agencies and the government of the Northwest Territories, helps keep the home fairly well maintained. Donations are also accepted.

Volunteers like Kris Hagan enjoy helping out by dropping in to help maintain the home, cook, clean or simply enjoy the company of other Northerners.

Glowach, who works seven days a week on a 12 hour shift, hopes to stay on at the home and intends on getting some workshops in place to help people get back on their feet.
