NNSL (Nov 06/98) - On the eve of Remembrance Day, come join local theatre troupe Diamonds in the Rough for their thoughtful, staged memorial dedicated to those who were touched by this century's wars.

"In the Shadow of the Poppy," playing at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre Nov. 10 at 8 p.m., was originally conceived two years ago by Heather Ross, George Diveky and Brian Wainwright. With this third annual performance, the multi-media show becomes a Remembrance Day tradition.

The piece consists of song, poetry, memories, pictures, as well as theatre proper.

"Yellowknife is a very creative community," says Ross, who organizes the event. "This event is designed to harness that creativity to remember the war dead as well as those that were left behind."

But for Ross, whose grandfather and father were in First and Second World War, respectively, this isn't just about public performance. It's a labour of love and giving. All proceeds are to be donated to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.

The fund is dedicated to improving the lives of ex-service members and their families as well as contributing to worthwhile community projects such as seniors' housing, medical research and training.

"It's an impressive production, using varied art forms to highlight events of the war years and to depict the horror and futility of war," explains past audience member, Mabel Collinson.

"It should continue as a tradition. Everyone should attend this year's presentation."
