Twenty-year-old man jailed for weapons, video theft

NNSL (Nov 06/98) - A 20-year-old Yellowknife man will spend the next 22 months in jail after being sentenced on Tuesday for stealing weapons from the Royal Canadian Army Cadets and robbing thousands of dollars in videos from a local store.

David James Scantland had pleaded guilty to the charges.

He was sentenced to 18 months in jail for a break-in at Microplay Video Games Aug. 17-21, 1998.

He also received one year to be served concurrently for a break-in at the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. hall at Giant mine Sept. 12, 1998.

In addition, he was sentenced to three months for a May 18, 1998 assault charge and one month for a mischief charge on the same night, both to be served consecutively.

Crown attorney Sandra Aitken had said the court could extend a penitentiary sentence, but asked that Scantland receive a minimum of two years less a day.
