NNSL (Sep 18/98) - The race for mayor and to sit on Inuvik town council is on, with election day set for Oct. 19.

Roger Allen will be the sole challenger for incumbent Mayor George Roach's seat. Roach is running for re-election.

There are eight council seats and 10 challengers: Clarence Wood, Donna Allen, Garry Smith, Vivian Hunter, Eddie Lavoie, Vince Sharpe, Denny Rogers, Derek Lindsay, Richard Binder and Don Craik.

Nominations for school board will be held open until Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. because the town received an "insufficient" number of nominees, according to senior administrative officer Don Howden.

"There are seven positions to be filled and we have only received five nominations at this point," Howden said.

Once elected, the mayor, councillors and members of the Inuvik district education authority will sit for two-year terms.

To be eligible to vote, people must have lived in Inuvik for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding election day or the day of the advance poll, Oct. 7.

Other criteria include that voters be Canadian citizens, 18 years old or older and reside in Inuvik on voting day.
